Some of the best cultural and art museums in the city can be found in the Warehouse/Arts District of New Orleans. Constantly rated as one of the best museums in the country, The National WWII Museum tells the American experience of the ‘war that changed the world’ through exhibits, multimedia experiences, an expansive collection of artifacts, and first-person oral histories. Located near the WWII Museum is the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience, which details the American Southern Jewish experience of the past several decades. The American Italian Cultural Center is open for self-guided tours of the city’s Italian ancestry, and the Preservation Resource Center offers an array of programming, classes, and tours related to New Orleans’ historic architecture and neighborhoods. The Louisiana Civil Rights Museum is located inside the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center and offers an interactive learning experience.
Home to the largest and most comprehensive collection of Southern art in the world, The Ogden Museum of Southern Art features permanent and rotating exhibits in all mediums. The Contemporary Art Center showcases modern art in addition to a theater space that hosts everything from film festivals to dance and theater.
The Arts District’s Julia Street is one of the most popular streets in the city for gallery hopping. With events like Jammin’ on Julia, White Linen Night, Art for Art’s Sake, and First Saturdays, there’s always a reason to come on down. Here you’ll find over a dozen art galleries lining both sides of Julia Street, occupying former storefronts, showrooms and other mercantile establishments that have been revamped, redecorated and ready for show.
