NOLA by Day: Mondays in New Orleans

How to Spend a Monday in NOLA

Folks in New Orleans are immune to contracting a case of the Mondays because every day of the week is packed with fun. Mondays have special significance in New Orleans history, as well, mainly because it’s the day for that classic Creole dish, red beans and rice. This quickly cooked dish stems from the traditional “wash days” that were held every Monday. Due to the absence of washing machines and dryers, washing days left little room for cooking, so the best and quickest choice was to put on some red beans. Even if your Monday doesn’t include laundry, it’s a fun tradition to take part in. See what other activities you can get into on a Monday!

Where to Eat on Mondays in New Orleans

Some restaurants are famous for their red beans and rice. Come and grab a bite Mandina’s on Canal St., Dooky Chase's Restaurant, Mena's Palace, and Joey K’s. Or if you’re feeling fancy, swing by Miss River at The Four Seasons. This special dish is served as a side at many traditional Creole spots across the city. While it’s often made with sausage, it can also be made vegetarian – just be sure to ask in advance.
