Jon Batiste, the Grammy, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Oscar-winning recording artist and former bandleader/musical director of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, is a force of nature. But before he was all of those things, Jon was a kid in New Orleans growing up in a deeply musical family and perfecting the craft that would come to make him the beloved and celebrated household name he is today. To watch Jon perform (or even to hear him speak) is to watch a physical embodiment of the soul of New Orleans. I’m going to Congo Square, the French Market, maybe stop by the Audubon Zoo, peak into The WWII Museum, of course to my family’s house for a meal, and then I’m either headed to Frenchmen Street to catch a set of music or I’ll finish the night at Neyow’s for a bite.

Hartley Wasser is a native New Orleanian, and works as the Director of Editorial and Content Marketing for New Orleans & Company. After graduating with a degree in journalism from Loyola University, she moved to New York to work on the Emmy Award-winning children’s program “Nick News with Linda Ellerbee” before returning home in 2011. She has worked in marketing for the city ever since. Hartley describes herself as “highly food motivated” and spends the majority of her time planning or thinking about meals around the city. She lives in the Irish Channel with her husband, two children, a dog, and a tortoise named Roger.
