Jon Batiste, the Grammy, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Oscar-winning recording artist and former bandleader/musical director of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, is a force of nature. But before he was all of those things, Jon was a kid in New Orleans growing up in a deeply musical family and perfecting the craft that would come to make him the beloved and celebrated household name he is today. To watch Jon perform (or even to hear him speak) is to watch a physical embodiment of the soul of New Orleans. As he kicks off his national tour, he shared a few of his favorite things about the city. Learn more below.

1. When was the last time you fell in love with New Orleans?

Always! Because of moments like hearing the Hot 8 Brass band echoing through the streets of the French Quarter on a bright summer morning.

2. It's a beautiful day in New Orleans - where/how are you spending it?

I’m going to Congo Square, the French Market, maybe stop by the Audubon Zoo, peak into The WWII Museum, of course to my family’s house for a meal, and then I’m either headed to Frenchmen Street to catch a set of music or I’ll finish the night at Neyow’s for a bite.

3. It's a friend's first time visiting the city - what's one thing they can't leave without doing?

Find a second line. March in the second line cause it will change your life.

4. How would you describe New Orleans in one word?

Essential.
