Haunted Restaurants & Bars in New Orleans

After losing his house in a poker game, Pierre Antoine Lepardi Jourdan threw himself off the second story window of what is now Muriel’s in 1814. His ghost doesn't appear human, but as a glimmer of sparkly light. You may notice stuff flying around the courtyard or merely out of place, a reminder of Jourdan’s spirit. 

This now-eatery and bar had a few different roles during since it was built around 1800, which has led to a variety of different specters haunting the site. Because it served as a hospital during the Civil War, the ghost of a Confederate soldier can be spotted walking the second-floor balcony. Other common ghostly phenomena at Napoleon House are from the 20th century – the figure of a little old lady sweeping the balcony and the mysterious reappearance of glasses on the bar once everything has been cleaned and put away for the night. 

Set in a carriage house built in the late 1700s, Sylvain is a restaurant in the French Quarter. It is said to be haunted by a former Storyville madam who occupied the building before it became a restaurant. 

The walls tell a story at the Old Absinthe House, and you can count on crafty absinthe concoctions to leave you seeing shadows. It is said that the ghosts of voodoo priestess Marie Leveau, and well as, Jean Lafitte and Andrew Jackson, haunt the saloon. 

Carousel Bar is located inside Hotel Monteleone, which is known for its haunted history. Legend has it, the 14th floor (actually the 13th floor) of Hotel Monteleone is home to some paranormal activity. Guests have reported hearing the footsteps of Maurice Begere, the young ghost child who haunts the hotel. 

It’s said that Antoine Alciator, the founder of this famous family-owned restaurant, returns to check up on his ancestors. Other spirits in 19th century clothing peer from mirrors in the washrooms. As the oldest family-run restaurant in the United States, it makes sense that there’s a haunted history at Antoine's! 

Built between 1722 and 1732, Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop is said to be haunted by the spirit of Jean Lafitte himself, the notorious pirate who allegedly used the building as a front for his smuggling operations. Patrons and staff report seeing a dark figure in period clothing near the fireplace, while others have witnessed glasses mysteriously sliding across tables and the jukebox turning on by itself. Visitors also describe feeling sudden cold spots throughout the building and hearing unexplained footsteps on the old wooden floors when no one else is around.
