Dat Dog and Son of a Saint are coming together on Thursday, July 23, to celebrate their sixth annual National Hot Dog Day together, including the traditional unveiling of the next “Son of a Saint ‘Dog.” The Son of a Saint ‘Dog is featured on Dat Dog’s House Special menu year-round, with a new one created each National Hot Dog Day that features a different arrangement of Dat Dog’s gourmet sausages and unique toppings. The sale of each special ‘dog is a direct contribution to Son of a Saint’s program, dedicated to mentorship and transforming the lives of fatherless boys across Greater New Orleans.

Usually National Hot Dog Day is one big party, involving a hot dog dressing competition between local celebrities and role models, all vying for the title of Champion ‘Dog Designer and bragging rights as creator of the new Son of a Saint ‘Dog. While many events this year have had to suspend or cancel altogether, Dat Dog and Son of a Saint recognize the significance of the tradition’s mission and message and see the need for National Hot Dog Day to go on with just a few modifications.

In lieu of a public gathering, Son of a Saint supporters, and Dat Dog lovers are invited to submit their most delicious ideas for the 2020-2021 Son of a Saint ‘Dog via a Google form that can be accessed at bit.ly/sonofasaintdog2020. Chef Nina Compton, 2018 James Beard Award winner for Best Chef: South and Son of a Saint Ambassador, is donating her expertise on good food to determine the winning hot dog, which will be decided on Monday, July 20, ahead of the National Hot Dog Day celebration on July 23.

“Our partnership with Dat Dog has been tremendous and this year’s continued partnership is more needed than ever,” says Son of a Saint Founder and CEO Bivan “Sonny” Lee III. “We haven't stopped our efforts in the midst of these unique and uncertain times, and we plan to keep working as hard as we can to set an example for our boys and for the community that’s watching. Like Dat Dog, we want to take action and continue to be a part of the change taking effect in our world.”

“The positive work Son of a Saint does for New Orleans’ youth makes us a better city, and we’ll only improve as they achieve their objectives,” says Chef Compton. “Creating art from a hot dog, a food often thought of as plain, is such a fun way to support this mission, and I’m proud to be appointed the celebrity judge.”

Dat Dog’s Director of Marketing, Laurie G. Fisher, notes, “Our partnership with Son of a Saint is valuable not because of the hot dog, but because of the opportunity to make real change happen in our community.”

The winning recipe will be decided by Nina Compton on Monday, July 20th. The creator of the recipe, the new Champion ‘Dog Designer, will be recognized and invited to attend an intimate get together at Dat Dog with members of the Son of a Saint organization and Chef Compton. Guests at the gathering will get first tastes of the winning ‘dog. The hot dog will become the featured Son of a Saint ‘Dog on Dat Dog’s menu for the next year.  National Hot Dog Day is July 23rd.
