When you think of Tulane Football today, the first thing that comes to mind is the epic 46-45 win against USC in the Cotton Bowl in January 2023. But Green Wave football dates to the 1890s when they played the first organized football game in the city of New Orleans. Throughout their more than a century of existence, Green Wave football has seen numerous head coaches, thousands of players—and an American Athletic Conference championship.
On game day at Yulman Stadium, you can expect a lively crowd decked out in green and blue, with the Tulane marching band and cheerleaders providing support from the sidelines. Tulane's nickname was adopted during the 1920 season after a song titled "The Rolling Green Wave" was published in the “Tulane Hullabaloo,” the student newspaper. The school mascot, Greenie, is an animated rolling wave, not intentionally but certainly representative of the ups and downs of the team’s standings over the years. If one thing is for certain, the good times certainly roll (wave) at a home game at Tulane's Yulman Stadium.
