For over 80 years, Fodor’s Travel has offered travel tips for cities across the world. Each year, they complete a list of 52 must-see places around the globe, called the Fodor’s Go List. New Orleans, in particularly the Bywater neighborhood, made the list of places to travel in 2019.

The Bywater sits along the Mississippi River past the French Quarter. The colorful neighborhood is full of shotgun houses, vibrant murals and street art, vintage shops and record stores, trendy restaurants and so much more. You won’t find anything quite like it anywhere else, and you’re sure to get a local’s experience.

Fodor’s called out some of our favorite neighborhood gems as the must-visit places. Restaurants mentioned include Bywater American Bistro, Bacchanal, N7, Bywater Bakery, The Country Club and Paladar 511. Attractions mentioned include NOCCA and the Music Box Village. For a full list of neighborhood finds, see here.

Fodor’s also mentioned that two weekends before Mardi Gras is an ideal time to visit the Bywater because of the Krewe of Chewbacchus parade. In 2019, this would take place in February. The walking parade is full of sci-fi characters decked in full costume, wandering the streets of the neighborhood. However, the Bywater is a wonderfully eclectic place to visit in Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Wondering where to travel alone or with a group of friends? The Bywater is great for both occasions.
