Carla Pensono is your go-to girl for all things eat, drink, and fun throughout the city. As the founder and president of CarlaMedia LLC, she creates digital and social content for local restaurants, businesses and events on a daily basis . She even hosts her own local TV news segment turned digital show that highlights local restaurants in the New Orleans area.
She also serves as a local food judge, BestFoodFeed contributor and Where Y'at Magazine social content creator.
Her eight-year, award-winning career in journalism includes roles such as reporter, weather anchor, traffic anchor, news anchor and host. She got her start as the Morning News/Weather Anchor at the NBC affiliate in Joplin, Missouri (KSN16), before moving on to become the ABC affiliate in New Orleans (WGNO) and the Morning Weather/Traffic Anchor at the NBC affiliate in Baton Rouge (WVLA). Carla earned a Broadcast Journalism for TV degree at Columbia College Chicago.
At all three stations, she took her love of food to create a weekly restaurant segment.
Carla is originally from Buffalo, NY and has been living in southeast Louisiana since 2015. She loves embracing Louisiana culture! What is your geaux-to stop for dinner and drinks in the city?
Depends on the neighborhood and what I’m looking for, but you can’t go wrong with going to Tito’s Ceviche & Pisco Bar or Baru Bistro & Tapas in Uptown/Magazine Street walk to Henry’s or Rendezvous for after drinks to play darts & pool. I love great dive bars!
The best month to visit New Orleans? Why?
I have two best months: May & October! May because there is Jazz Fest, great weather, crawfish season, great fishing, and there are so many other festivals to enjoy. The city is alive!
What are your top 5 must-do's for a first-time visitor to New Orleans?
- Must walk around the Quarter: get chargrilled oysters at Mr. Ed’s on Bienville, visit Lafitte's Blacksmith for a purple drink, get beignets at Cafe Beignet or Cafe Du Monde
- Get invited to a boil party (shrimp, crab, and/or crawfish)
- Go out on Frenchman Street to watch some live music
- Visit Lafayette Cemetery
- Eat all the local seafood you can!
What is your favorite off-the-beaten-path place in New Orleans?
Royal Thai Bistreaux in Harahan best Thai spot in the city!
Who has the best happy hour in the city?
The Bombay Club: $6 cocktails and $4 small bites happy hour 4-7 pm Monday-Thursday and 1-7 pm Friday-Saturday. Also, Superior Seafood happy hour 4-6:30 pm oysters are only 50 cents a piece, $3 house wines and draft beer, and frozen drinks are large for the price of a small.
