Located in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter, Fives is a new raw bar from Sandstone, the hospitality and development team behind several of the city’s beloved boutique hotels including Columns, Drifter and Hotel Saint Vincent (in collaboration with MML Hospitality).
Housed in a small, inviting space on St. Ann Street in Jackson Square’s Lower Pontalaba building — a National Historic Landmark dating back to 1851 — Fives has been reimagined by owner and designer Jayson Seidman, who also designed Lengua Madre, an acclaimed modern Mexican restaurant in the Lower Garden District. Seidman drew inspiration from Simon Hernsheim, the area’s 19th-century tobacco merchant and philanthropist whom Columns was originally built for. As a reference to Hernsheim, Fives is named after the old-fashioned slang for a five-pack of cigars.
The charming interiors feature a mix of modern and vintage elements evoking feelings of nostalgia. A wooden oval bar with a green marble top is situated in the center of the dining room beneath an antique chandelier, while round tables with bentwood chairs and a series of 8 sketches by American printmaker and painter, Gerald Gooch, line the perimeter of the room. Helmed by Executive Chef Paul Terrebonne of Columns, and Bar Manager, James O’Donnell (previously of The Four Seasons), the pared-down menu features a selection of oysters, caviar, raw seafood, and complementary dishes to round out a meal like the Little Gem Salad, Beef Tartare, Roasted Bone Marrow (brioche, cilantro perdillade, capers) and a Crème Brûlée dessert. The beverage program features rare spirits and cocktails including classics, New Orleans signatures, and Fives originals like the Gin Joint (Gin, chartreuse, celery, sage, lemon), the Mama Don’t Smoke (aged rum, Ramazzotti, lapsang souchong, tobacco) and the Fives Swizzle (mezcal, yellow chartreuse, 5 spice, pineapple, lime). Wine, beer, and a selection of martinis are also available including the Columns Martini (grey goose, bombay sapphire, dry vermouth, and pickled vegetables).
Fives is available for private parties and is currently open on a first come first serve basis from 11 a.m. -10 p.m. daily.
