Dee-1, born David Augustine, Jr., is a New Orleans rapper with an infectious smile and a laser-sharp focus on serving his music, his faith, and the greater community. He is, indeed, a force: the young musician from New Orleans East (and basketball star and homecoming king at Ben Franklin High School) was presented with the “Power of Image” award by the NAACP in 2020 for his influential impact and promotion of positivity in his community, and in 2021, Governor John Bel Edwards appointed him to the Louisiana Council for the Success of Black Men and Boys.

Dee-1 has released several heralded mixtapes, singles, and albums under major and independent labels, and has collaborated with the genre’s heavy hitters, including Manny Fresh, Lil Wayne, Macklemore, Murs, Drake, and Juvenile. His 2010 single and music video “Jay, 50, & Weezy” put him on the map and was praised for its narrative drive and positive message. Audience favorites include the single “Shine On,” which features his mentor The Game and Des Monroe, “I’m Not Perfect (I’m a Christian),” and his jaunty tribute to his hometown, “Rebirth.” Recent efforts include a 2022 studio album, “Finding Balance.” He has performed around the world, and is a favorite at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.  Fun facts: Dee-1 taught high school math after graduating from LSU, wrote a song about paying off his college debts, and was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work hosting “The Manhattan Project.”
