Church choirs, gospel bands and other groups create a joyful noise every October at Praise Fest NOLA, a free outdoor celebration of Gospel music on the banks of Bayou St. John.
The three-day free festival brings more than 50 acts to the stage with past groups including Jessica Harvey and the Difference, the Chapman Family, Eric Waddell and the Abundant Life Singers, and the Gospel Soul Children.
In addition to the hand-clapping, foot-stomping sounds, there are motivational speakers, as well as arts and crafts and other items for sale. There is a pop-up music store selling the CDs and tapes of the many acts that perform so when you like what you hear, you can meet the artists and bring some music home with you. There are also many delicious food choices with a focus on soul food.
The goal of Praise Fest is to bring communities together in a fun, healthy way. An important part of the festival is booths sponsored by local non-profits that offer information on health screenings, nutrition and exercise. There is also information about career training and other educational opportunities.
So come hear some uplifting music under New Orleans’ gorgeous October skies and celebrate healthy living.
