Windsor Uncorked: Wine Series Continues into Summer with European Exploration

Windsor Court celebrates National Wine Day with special promotion as
monthly tastings with Sommelier Bill Burkhart continue

May 23, 2016 (New Orleans, LA) - As National Wine Day approaches this week, Windsor Court Sommelier Bill Burkhart is preparing a summerlong celebration. To kick-things off, guests will enjoy $2 off glasses of wine in Cocktail Bar on Wednesday, May 25. Then, Burkhart will extend the wine-lover's experience during the ongoing Windsor Uncorked series in The Grill Room. In addition to offering the perfect wine pairings to accompany the lunch and dinner menus, he will educate novices and enthusiasts alike on the vast varietals and abundant appellations across the globe.

From the hidden gems of Austria to the famous reds of the Southern Rhône, this summer, Burkhart will lead guests on a journey across some of Europe's most notable wine regions. Upcoming classes include:

  • The Wines of Austria (Tuesday, June 14) - Grüner Veltliner, produced at a number of sweetness levels, is Austria's signature wine to be sure, but it is far from all that Austria has to offer. This class will explore and sample some of Austria's other important wines.
  • The Wines of Northern Rhône (Tuesday, July 12) - Attendees will learn about and taste the incredible Viognier from Condrieu, as well as the famous Syrah blends from the Côte-Rôtie, Crozes Hermitage and Saint Joseph.
  • The Wines of Southern Rhône (Tuesday, August 9) - This series standout will examine the magnificent blends of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Counoise from France's first officially recognized wine region, The Rhône. Guests will taste and evaluate wines from the Côtes du Rhône, Vacqueyras and the legendary Châteauneuf du Pape.

All classes begin at 6 p.m. and cost $45 per person, plus tax. The price reduces to $40 per person, plus tax, when purchasing three or more classes at once.

Upon joining the hotel last summer, Burkhart, who holds a Level II Court of Master Sommeliers Certification, spearheaded a comprehensive redesign of Windsor Court's nearly 7,000 bottle wine list. At that time, he also implemented the CoravinTM 1000 System, which allows the restaurant to access, pour and serve wine without removing the cork. One of the only restaurants in the city to provide the service, the Coravin gives The Grill Room the opportunity to offer a rotating list of rare and vintage wines by the glass while keeping them safe from oxidation.
