Value-Driven, Small-Production Wines Steal the Show

Toups South, Chef Isaac Toups’ restaurant in Central City, New Orleans, has become a go-to destination for bold southern regional cuisine, attentive service and great cocktails. Now thanks to recently-appointed sommelier Thea Sasseen, the acclaimed eatery also boasts a newly expanded wine list. Each Wednesday, guests can enjoy Sasseen’s creative world-class picks with $25 bottles of wines, available all day.

Under Sasseen’s direction, the new wine program at Toups South is “an entirely domestic wine list, featuring mostly boutique wines, many of them bio-dynamic and organic, if not in certification, at least in practice,” says Sasseen. “We’re looking to showcase small producers that are interested in exploring the unique terroir of the United States, which is still a comparatively young wine region.  These wines are pure and expressive, and most of all, many of these are small producers who deserve our support and attention – it’s something special for our customers that also reflects the same values we practice in our kitchen with local farmers and producers.”

On Wine Wednesdays (WW) Sasseen will showcase a rotating selection of wines aimed at highlighting good value and unique varietals, while complementing Chef Toups’ creative southern dishes. “Wine Wednesday gives us the chance to bring in fun, value-oriented wines that diverge from our standard program.  Mid-week is a time when people are still interested in buying a fun bottle of wine with dinner, but maybe not a ‘splurge’ wine.  This small but diverse list gives them a chance to do just that,” says Sasseen.

Wednesdays aren’t the only day where value is the name of the game. Toups South Happy Hour is now available every day except Tuesday and Sunday – from 3PM – 6PM. $5 wines-by-the-glass and $6 signature cocktails, as well as Chef Isaac Toups’ signature small plates ($5 - $15). New to Happy Hour is the Set Up where guests can play bartender. Each Set Up comes with a choice of spirit served in a Wheatley 6 oz. flask ($17) or a Sazerac 7 oz. bottle ($20) accompanied by a choice of house made soda including cola, root beer, pineapple & grapefruit or the rotating weekly concoction.

Toups South is located inside of the Southern Food & Beverage Museum at 1504 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard in New Orleans. The restaurant serves lunch daily from 11AM–3PM; dinner Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday 5PM–9PM, Friday–Saturday 5PM–10PM; Sunday brunch 10AM–3PM; Happy Hour Monday–Saturday 3PM–7PM at the bar; Wine Wednesday available all day at the bar. CLOSED TUESDAYS. For more information, please call (504) 304-2147 or visit www.toupssouth.com
