WHY: The Historic New Orleans Collection is celebrating four years of recent acquisitions and two years of its newest exhibition space, the Laura Simon Nelson Galleries for Louisiana Art, with an exhibition of more than 50 works of Louisiana visual art, including paintings and decorative arts. More than two centuries' worth of artistic trends is on display: the earliest items date to the 1790s, while the most recent are 21st-century creations.
Paintings include rural landscapes and city scenes, dock scenes, still lifes, genre scenes and both full-size and miniature portraits. Among the artists featured are Jacques Amans, William Henry Buck, Leonard Flettrich, Clarence Millet, William Tolliver, Ellsworth Woodward and William Woodward. Together the works display the rich fabric of the cultural history of Louisiana.
"Recent Acquisitions in Louisiana Art, 2010-2014" opened Saturday, Jan. 10, and will be available to the public at 400 Chartres St. through May 2, 2015. The galleries are open Tuesday-Saturday (excluding holidays) from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Admission is free.
