NEW ORLEANS, La., Oct. 3rd, 2014 - The London Clayworks brings a new pottery studio to the Bywater nestled in an inviting warehouse space at 3000 Royal St. Led by NOCCA graduate and London native Karin Burt, the studio boasts 750 square feet of functional, comfortable space and welcomes visitors to its grand opening Saturday, Oct. 18th, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event offers guests a chance to get their hands dirty with clay and tools while enjoying complimentary cocktails.
Boasting first-class equipment - including three pottery wheels, large workbenches, slab rollers, a variety of glazes, clay and a kiln - The London Clayworks accommodates all potters from professionals to hobbyists. Competitive prices for daily or open use include everything but clay, and classes are offered. Those who choose open studio membership receive the added benefit of their own webpage via the store's website, for built-in promotion through The London Clayworks' platform.
For Burt, her business is all about the potter, whether it's through cross-promotion, community-building or the atmosphere of the store itself. The building's artistic, yet utilitarian, aesthetic is the perfect place for potters to get the creative juices flowing.
"I've tried to make The London Clayworks look nice and be fully functional so people will enjoy being here," Burt said. "One way I've tried to set myself apart is by putting a lot of thought into the design of the studio. Since pottery studios are traditionally messy, dusty places, I've kept it light and airy and try to have everything clean and organized."
The London Clayworks' namesake is the result of Burt's eclectic background, as a native of London, England, with a strong connection to New Orleans through her education. Burt first found a love for ceramics while living in New Orleans as a teenager and studying at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. Later, she returned to London to continue her studies in art and design at Chelsea College of Art before earning a bachelor's of fine arts in ceramics at Camberwell College of Art; both colleges are part of the University of the Arts London.
A true artist, Burt enjoys throwing on the wheel, as well as hand-building, and particularly enjoys working with porcelain to create simple and elegant pieces. She shares this passion for clayworking through teaching others and giving them a space to cultivate their own talents.
