Prosperity in Algiers Program to Present Opportunity Zone Information

NEW ORLEANS – Throughout the Algiers Tricentennial this year, the programming has mostly focused on the history of the area; however, on Nov. 9, a special economic development seminar will highlight the future.

Prosperity in Algiers: Focus on Opportunity will be presented by Old Algiers Main Street Corporation in cooperation with Algiers Development District and Algiers Economic Development Foundation, The event will begin with breakfast at 8:30 a.m. on November 9 at the Olde Algiers Cultural Center, 1800 Newton Street. The panel discussion will be led by Flozell Daniels, CEO of the Foundation for Louisiana and chair of the Regional Transit Authority Board of Commissioners. Panelists include representatives from New Orleans Business Alliance, City of New Orleans and Algiers Economic Development District.

In general, the topic will be economic development opportunities throughout Algiers, with special focus on federally designated Opportunity Zones; there is one in Old Algiers, and the other the entirety of Federal City.

“This offers the ability to bring attention to some of the special opportunities that are in the community and familiarize everyone with the tax incentives for development in Opportunities Zones,” said Valerie Robinson, president of Old Algiers Main Street Corporation, which has spearheaded the Tricentennial programs.  “We are looking at not just preserving a 300-year-old community, but creating equitable development opportunities for our residents and businesses for the next 300 years.”

An optional tour of the Old Algiers Opportunity Zone will follow, but advance registration is required. To register, visit Event in Algiers or email

Entergy is the primary sponsor for this event.  For more information about this and other Tricentennial activities, visit
