On December 9, 2016, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art will open CURRENTS 2016: New Orleans Photo Alliance Members Showcase in partnership with the New Orleans Photo Alliance and PhotoNOLA. CURRENTS is an annual juried exhibition showcasing members of the New Orleans Photo Alliance. Featuring four to five images by each selected artist, the show gives viewers a deeper insight into each photographer's vision and reflects an overview of contemporary photographic practices.
Kevin Miller, Associate Curator at the Southeast Museum of Photography located in Daytona Beach, Florida, juried the eighth installment of this annual exhibition. In his words: "The rich array of works by the 17 contemporary photographers selected for Currents 2016 are distinguished by the deepening ties that all the artists have to the use of narrative, poetics, complex allusion and the evocation of atmosphere. The pieces are simply dazzling in their deft use of vintage processes, experimental print, process, and sequencing methods, collage and by their depth of gesture and print texture. The truly meaningful use of imagery, thematics and a suggestive pictorial space is refreshing in the penetration of mere appearances by every artist and the engagement of the viewer in a disciplined and coherent mythopoesis."
The featured artists are: Jane Fulton Alt, Matthew Arnold, Craig Becker, Christa Blackwood, Lisette de Boisblanc, Benjamin Dimmitt, Josh Hailey, Jamie Hankin, Brittany Markert, Robbie McClaran, Colleen Mullins, Owen Murphy, Hannah Neal, Marcy Palmer, S. Gayle Stevens & Judy Sherrod, Milisa Taylor-Hicks, and Bill Vaccaro.
Additionally, the Ogden Museum will host four events over the course of PhotoNOLA: an opening reception for CURRENTS; the annual PhotoNOLA PhotoWALK, a gallery talk with artist Maude Schuyler Clay about her exhibition Mississippi History, currently on view in the Museum's 3rd floor photography galleries; and book signings by photographers Maude Schuyler Clay and Bill Yates.

CURRENTS 2016 Opening Reception
Friday, December 9, 5 - 7 PM
This reception celebrates the opening of CURRENTS 2016: New Orleans Photo Alliance Members Showcase on view at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art from December 8 through January 29, 2017. The reception will feature a juror's talk by Kevin Miller, Associate Curator at the Southeast Museum of Photography located in Daytona Beach, Florida. This event is free and open to the public.
PhotoNOLA PhotoWALK
Friday, December 9, 6 - 9 PM
Participants in this PhotoNOLA event will display their work for an evening portfolio review in the Ogden Museum's Patrick F. Taylor Library. Over 70 artists will have their current work on view, covering every aspect of the photographic spectrum, from antiquarian processes to cutting edge documentary work. This event is free and open to the public.
Maude Schuyler Clay: Mississippi History Gallery Talk

Maude Schuyler Clay will conduct a gallery talk of her Ogden Museum exhibition Mississippi History. The gallery talk will be moderated by the Ogden Museum's Curator of Photography Richard McCabe. The gallery talk is in conjunction with PHOTONOLA 2016, and is free to Ogden members, Photo Alliance members and PhotoNOLA badge holders, and free with museum admission.
Maude Schuyler Clay: Mississippi History features photographs from the 2015 Steidl publication, Mississippi History and a selection of photographs from the same period not included in the book.
Mississippi History is the culmination of over 30 years of photographic exploration in color portraiture by Maude Schuyler Clay. These portraits capture the cast of characters in Clay's everyday world, including family, friends and strangers. Together these portraits tell not only the photographer's personal history, but also the history of Mississippi in the late 20th century.
Maude Schuyler Clay: Mississippi History and Bill Yates: Sweatheart Roller Skating Rink Book Signings

Bill Yates and Maude Schuyler Clay will be present at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art to sign copies of their respective books.
Bill Yates's book Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink was published by Fall Line Press in 2016. Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink includes an essay by the Ogden Museum's Curator of Photography Richard McCabe. The Ogden Museum organized and hosted the exhibition Bill Yates: Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink in 2015.
Maude Schuyler Clay's book Mississippi History was published by Steidl in 2015. An exhibition of Maude Schuyler Clay's photograph is currently on view in the Ogden Museum's photo galleries until January 15, 2017.
The book signings will take place on the 3rd floor of the museum. The event is free to Ogden members, Photo Alliance members and PhotoNOLA badge holders, and free with museum admission.
Located in the vibrant Warehouse Arts District of downtown New Orleans, Louisiana, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art holds the largest collection of Southern art and is recognized for its original exhibitions, public events, and educational programs which examine the development of visual art alongside Southern traditions of music, literature, and culinary heritage to provide a comprehensive story of the South. Established in 1999 and in Stephen Goldring Hall since 2003, the Museum welcomes almost 80,000 visitors annually, and attracts diverse audiences through its broad range of programming including exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, and concerts which are all part of its mission to broaden the knowledge, understanding, interpretation, and appreciation of the visual arts and culture of the American South.
The Ogden Museum is open Wednesday through Monday from 10AM-5PM and also on Thursdays from 6-8PM for Ogden After Hours. Admission is free to Museum Members and $13.50 for adults, $11 for seniors 65 and older, $7.25 for children ages 5-17 and free for children under 5.
The Ogden Museum is free to Louisiana Residents on Thursdays from 10AM-5PM courtesy of The Helis Foundation. The Helis Foundation is a Louisiana private foundation, established by the William Helis Family. The Art Funds of the Helis Foundation advance access to the arts for the community through contributions that sustain operations for, provide free admission to, acquire works of art, and underwrite major exhibitions and projects of institutions within the Greater New Orleans area.
The Museum is closed Martin Luther King Day, Lundi Gras and Mardi Gras, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day.
