NEW ORLEANS THOUGH HER EYES: THE OLD NO. 77 HOTEL & CHANDLERY
AND WHERE Y'ART TO DEBUT "FAIRER SEX, SET ONE", DURING WHITE LINEN NIGHT
Celebration of Crescent City female artists opens Aug. 6, 2016 and runs through fall.

July 27, 2016 - NEW ORLEANS, La. - For as long as New Orleans has existed, art has represented the diverse perspectives of its residents and been inspired by a place where life is celebrated with second lines, jazz is a universal language, chromatic neighborhoods extend far beyond the French Quarter and people discover a new way of seeing the world. On August 6, 2016, the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery - a historic art-centric hotel housed in the Warehouse Art District - and Where Y'Art - a community of art lovers and cultivators of emerging artists - will debut their fourth collaborative exhibition at the hotel. Fairer Sex, Set One will explore what it means to be a female artist through the eyes of three contemporary artists who have chosen the Crescent City as their muse. Showcasing the artistic prowess of Ember Soberman, Saegan Swanson and Lori Sperier, the exhibition will feature a bold collection of over 30 works curated by Catherine Todd and Collin Ferguson - the visionaries behind Where Y'Art who support, promote and empower local artists, and fellow women, with unbridled passion.

Ember Soberman, a Louisiana native, draws inspiration from New Orleans and the spaces where man-made and organic forms intersect. She uses encaustic painting to create multilayered, dimensional art works through a process in which wax, resin and pigments are heated, mixed, and applied in layers to plaster. Her subjects vary from abstract color fields to portraits and landscapes - all created with intent to preserve a sacred sense of place. Her work has been displayed in galleries across the US and abroad.

Saegan Swanson, who emerged on the New Orleans' art scene after making her way to the Crescent City in 2013, turns to photographs as source images for her collection of figurative paintings. Evoking the nostalgia imbued within each photograph, Swanson's intimate body of work centers on subjects who are both personal acquaintances and anonymous strangers found in old photo albums discovered at flea markets. Fairer Sex, Set One will mark the largest public showing of her works, an innovative collection that encompasses eight years of re-composing photographs through a paintbrush.

A Louisiana native born with a passion for art, Lori Sperier employs a precise process to her figurative and landscape paintings while her abstract works tend to reveal themselves more organically with the materials and process dictating the outcome of the finished piece. Using a number of mediums in her works, she turns to oil and acrylic paints, compressed charcoal, pencils and molding paste to bring vibrant details, texture and richness to her art works.

Fairer Sex, Set One will open with a launch party from 7 to 10 p.m. during White Linen Night, the city's biggest art event, on Saturday, August 6. The party will feature music from a super-group of New Orleans ladies - Margie Perez, Monica McIntyre and Joy Clark - and libations by Compère Lapin's own bar maven, Abigail Gullo. The interactive exhibition will allow show goers to interact with the art on their own comfort level by scanning QR codes to discover more about the artists, inspiration behind each piece, as well as shop additional works in their catalog on Whereyart.net. Fairer Sex, Set One, is the first half of a dual-location all-female group show - the second half, Fairer Sex, Set Two will debut at the Where Y'Art's gallery on Royal Street in the Marigny during Dirty Linen Night on August 13, 2016.
