WHO: More for the 504, a new women's philanthropic giving circle for New Orleans, will present a $25,000 donation to non-profit The Roots of Music on Giving Tuesday, November 29, 2016. To celebrate this gift, The Roots of Music Crusaders will perform at McDonogh 35 at 6:00pm that same evening.
More for the 504's mission is to encourage women's involvement in philanthropy by pooling members' contributions in order to make one annual large-scale grant to a greater New Orleans non-profit that supports Family, Education, Environment, or Health and Wellness.
After receiving a number of grant applications and evaluating them, More for the 504's membership voted on three non-profits. The Roots of Music garnered the most member votes and won. "2016 is More for the 504's inaugural year, and we are honored to be able to support The Roots of Music and help it to continue supporting NOLA's underserved youth," said one of the founding members, Karen Biever.
The Roots of Music empowers the youth of New Orleans through music education, academic support and mentorship, while preserving and promoting the unique musical and cultural heritage of our city. Roots instructors teach music history and theory, as well as instrumental instruction and ensemble performance preparation for kids ages 9-14 from low-income households, and provide students with hot meals and round-trip transportation to reduce common barriers to participation.
