45 local businesses have banded together to create the Babes in Business map, a shopping roadmap of women-owned small businesses throughout New Orleans.

Spearheaded by Glitter Box, a Royal Street boutique that sells crafts, clothing and accessories made exclusively by women entrepreneurs, the Babes in Business map helps shoppers find everything from rhinestone-fringed fanny packs to apothecary remedies.

Glitter Box Curator Alice McGillicuddy initiated the Babes in Business map to support fellow women entrepreneurs throughout New Orleans. https://www.glitterboxno.com/babes-in-business-map/

“Women entrepreneurs face many challenges that our male counterparts do not,” says McGillicuddy.  According to a report called “Tackling The Gender Gap: What Women Entrepreneurs Need to Thrive,” women are starting more business year after year but their businesses do not appear to grow as quickly as men-led companies.

Babes in Business seeks to change that.

Spotlighting business from Mid-City to the Marigny, Treme to Algiers Point, Babes in Business is just one-way that Glitter Box seeks to advance the local women.

Each month, Glitter Box donates a percentage of profits to organizations that help women thrive in both their business and personal lives. This month’s non-profit recipient is Women with a Vision, which addresses a variety of social conditions that effect women’s mental and physical health.

And last month, Glitter Box conducted on-site voter registration to more easily engage women in the electoral process.

As the saying goes, “A rising tide lifts all boats,” says McGillicuddy.
