New Orleans cemeteries are truly unique with above-ground tombs standing as monuments dating all the way back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Although the tombs are beautiful, aesthetic value isn't the only reason we inter our beloved departed relatives above ground. Due to the high water table in New Orleans, early settlers discovered that if they tried to dig more than a few feet down, water would fill up the hole and their caskets would float!
Freinds of the Cabildo - Spring Tour
On Sunday, April 6, Friends of the Cabildo present their Spring Home tour throughout the French Quarter, followed by a reception to view the new exhibition at the Old U. S. Mint. The self-guided Spring Home Tour takes place from 1:00 pm-4:00 pm (tickets sold until 3:00 pm, homes open until 4:00 pm). Tours begin at the 1850 House, 523 St. Ann in Jackson Square or at the Old U.
