For centuries, the Black Masking Indian tradition has stood as an emblem of resistance, resilience, and reverence. Each suit constitutes a story. Each feather serves as a declaration. Each Big Chief acts as a keeper of knowledge passed down through generations. Black Masking Indian suits exist as living works of art, crafted with intricate hand-sewn beads, rhinestones, and feathers. This tradition represents a sacred cultural inheritance and the spiritual backbone of our communities.
Today, this inheritance faces a mounting threat.
Essential plume feathers now command prices up to $600 per pound. A single chief’s suit often requires several pounds of material. This soaring cost forces revered elders to retreat from masking and creating. It simultaneously barricades emerging culture bearers from stepping forward. When financial barriers interrupt this chain of knowledge, we lose more than a suit: we lose a pulse point of the living soul of New Orleans.
This reality birthed the Big Chief Feather Trust.
A Lasting Legacy
The Big Chief Feather Trust operates in partnership with New Orleans & Company. Stewarded by the Greater New Orleans Foundation, the Trust exists for a singular purpose: to secure and distribute the feathers and essential materials required for culture bearers to sew, teach, and mask.
Through year-round bulk procurement, the Trust stabilizes material costs. This ensures that feathers remain accessible to the artisans who dedicate their lives to this craft. This initiative transcends simple sustainability. It ensures the masters who define our global identity possess the resources to continue their work for decades to come.
Keepers of the Culture
The Trust follows the guidance of seasoned culture bearers. It prioritizes elders, youth, and active sewing circles. Advisory leadership includes Big Chief Shaka Zulu of the Golden Feather Hunters, whose advocacy shaped this initiative from its inception. The structure remains collaborative, community-centered, and authentic.
The Trust serves cultural continuity rather than individual personalities. The mission remains precise: protect the tradition by empowering the people who carry it forward.
Aligning with Vision 2035
At New Orleans & Company, our Vision 2035 calls us to celebrate and sustain our cultural economy by partnering with organizations that support economic empowerment, visibility, and leadership within the cultural community.
The Big Chief Feather Trust embodies that vision. People drive our cultural economy.
It draws its power from artists, musicians, chefs, and Black Masking Indians whose work dictates how the world perceives New Orleans. Supporting these creators is not charity: it is economic strategy. It is brand stewardship. It is an investment in the authenticity that distinguishes our city from any other place on earth.
When we protect the Black Masking Indian tradition, we protect a cornerstone of New Orleans’ cultural capital: a legacy admired globally and rooted deeply in our soil
Be a Part of the Legacy
Every donation contributes directly to the endowment, securing the future of the Black Masking tradition. All gifts are tax-deductible and processed securely by the Greater New Orleans Foundation.
Support may underwrite bulk feather orders, fund the “Kits for Kids” program for the next generation, or provide logistical assistance. Businesses and community leaders may also develop bespoke partnerships that demonstrate a long-term commitment to protecting this priceless American art form.
This represents a unique opportunity to align with the most resilient and enduring element of the New Orleans identity.
The feathers signify more than adornment. They are history. They are leaders. They are pride stitched into fabric and lifted high for the world to see.
