“Take me out to the ball game” in New Orleans means a trip to the “Shrine on Airline,” the gorgeous suburban field that’s home to the Baby Cakes, New Orleans’baseball team. Celebrating a new name (they were formerly the Zephyrs), as well as their 20th season in 2017, the Baby Cakes are a family entertainment focal point.
Since the team’s first at bat, more than 7 million fans have come out to the Metairie stadium to root for their hometown heroes, a Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. At the Shrine on Airline, the chairs are comfortable and the food divine — choose from chili dogs, pizza, onion mums and icy cold local beer. There’s even a grassy outfield perfect for picnicking and watching the game. You can beat the heat with a swimming pool with its own bar and buffet that can be rented by parties of 50 or more.
Throughout each season, look for fun promotional nights from amusing giveaways and $1 beers. There are Thursday night concerts after the game and fireworks on the weekend. Regularly scheduled games are held during the traditional summer baseball season through the beginning of September. For more package information and game times, visit www.milb.com.
