New Orleans Welcomes
The Society for Classical Studies & The Archaeological Institute of America!
AIA/SCS 2023 Joint Annual Meeting
Thursday, January 5th to Sunday, January 8th, 2023 | The Hyatt Regency New Orleans | 601 Loyola Avenue
A timeless city with a unique way of life, New Orleans is a journey and a celebration. Steeped in European traditions and Caribbean influences, the city calls curious minds to sweet sounds and savory aromas fueled by three hundred years of history. From the moment you arrive, New Orleans will beckon your ears, allure your eyes and enchant your heart. Indulge your senses and explore. We invite you to follow the scent of gumbo floating out the kitchen window, foster a path that leads to the sounds of drums and a Blues guitar, create the route that welcomes you to a historic mansion or a hidden courtyard… New Orleans is and will always be a picturesque metropolitan, a culturally rich haven and an authentic experience.
A Brief History of New Orleans
Volleyed between the French and the Spanish from the late 17th century until the United States bought Louisiana for pennies an acre in 1803, New Orleans is forever shaped by its European heritage. The city’s broad timeline offers a portal into what we see, taste, hear and experience in 21st century New Orleans. No other city in America keeps its history as vital and accessible as New Orleans. House after house, street after street, indeed entire neighborhoods, exude a rich sense of place, and serve as touchstones for fascinating history and complex culture. Look for it. In New Orleans, history can strut as loudly as a Carnival walking krewe, or creep as softly as a green lizard on a courtyard wall.
Thrilling. Colorful. Tragic. Inspiring.
