In the late 1930’s, entrepreneur and master builder Andrew Jackson Higgins designed a flat bottomed boat for the Louisiana Swamps. This design, named the "Eureka Boat" evolved during WWII into the Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel (LCVP), or "Higgins Boat". Higgins Industries became a powerhouse production enterprise and eventually employed over 20,000 workers and produced more than 20,000 boats for the war effort. Higgins hired all races and genders and paid them equally – a first in large enterprise. Minimum wage at the time was less than $20 per week.
