Pontchartrain was appointed as France’s Minister of Marine during the reign of Louis XIV. Chartered in 1975 as the decade’s first new parade in Orleans Parish, the krewe derives its name from the lake along whose shore its parades were staged until 1991. The male and female club then moved its procession from New Orleans East to a mid-city/downtown route and also changed the day of its parade from Sunday to Saturday. In 2002 the parade moved to the uptown parade route.
