Founded in 1972, the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists is the fiercely independent voice of Black workers within the trade union movement. CBTU advocates for a progressive society and a peaceful world that respects the rights and humanity of all people. With more than 50 chapters nationwide and one in Ontario, Canada, CBTU is making a meaningful difference in communities of color. CBTU's importance to the Black workforce is established by the fact that 1 of 10 employed African Americans belongs to a union. The influence of CBTU women has been indispensable, from day one. Our sisters have been the backbone of CBTU's successful community projects and political campaigns. Our Under40 group has become a thriving pipeline for emerging young leaders.

CBTU Connects

CBTU values its community partners who uplift struggling families and individuals everyday. At this convention, CBTU will partner with the New Orleans Mission to provide new socks and "gently" worn men's shoes donated by CBTU members across the U.S. and Canada. New Orleans Mission operates Louisiana's largest emergency shelters for men experiencing homelessness, addiction, job instability or mental health dilemmas. CBTU sponsors a community outreach program in the cities that host the coalition's annual convention, because giving back says, "we are about the people, for the people, and with the people." CBTU's Men's Committee is spearheading the collection of socks and shoes and will present the donated clothing to representatives of the nonprofit organization at a special breakfast, Saturday, May 27th, at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside Hotel. Former U.S. congressman Cedric Richmond (D-La) will be the keynote speaker.
