Ride with the Caramel Curves

The Unexpected Tour Guides

The Caramel Curves are New Orleans’ all female, all African American biker gang made up of 14 women known for burning rubber in mohawk helmets and pink leather jackets. They are mothers, small-business owners, and community leaders that began in 2005 as a sisterhood to empower women and make a statement about stereotypes in their neighborhood. According to Curves’ President, Coco, they like to prove people wrong since they, “don’t expect to see women on bikes like that,” and not in “baggy jeans and t-shirts.” Needless to say, they’ve become legends in New Orleans ever since. Watch our IGTV series and follow three of them as they take three travel influencers on an unforgettable ride through America’s most unexpected city*.

Behind the high heels and the pink burnouts are Tru, Coco and HoodPriss – three members of the Caramel Curves about to take some unsuspecting influencers on an unpredictable tour of the New Orleans they know and love. To prove that any traveler can find undiscovered stories in New Orleans, we invited three Instagram travel influencers: Dan Brian (@mallow610), Alyssa Ramos (@mylifesatravelmovie), and Ashley Renne (@heyashleyrenne).

In New Orleans, the most unexpected things happen when you wander away from well-known restaurants and businesses. Our influencers may travel the world for a living, but they’ve never been on a tour like this. To make it happen, we paired each of them up with a member of the Curves for a ride through the city on the back of a bike. Each route puts local spots on the map, leading the influencers into another side of New Orleans, through scenes off the beaten path that even some locals don’t even know about.

Since we got locals to become tour guides, we got locals to film the series, too. Filmmakers Justin Zweifach and Zac Manuel were born and raised in New Orleans and have a mixed-media style that emanates the culturally rich feel of the city. In the past, they’ve shot music videos for Big Freedia and Anaïs. For the IGTV episodes, they teamed up to create a unique kaleidoscope-like effect of blended digital and film footage.

We’re only as good as the people in our city. We aim to celebrate culture bearers, from musicians to chefs to the Caramel Curves and want to create work that locals feel proud to share. Only by telling the real stories of New Orleans can you see the city for what it truly is.
