About the Audubon Aquarium
Looming large against the Mississippi River is the world-renowned Audubon Aquarium. Home to more than 3,600 animals and 250 species, the aquarium lets visitors get up close and eye-to-eye with some of the most fascinating creatures of the ocean. Get a first-hand look at the African penguins, moon jellyfish, potbellied seahorses, and even a Louisiana alligator on your visit.
2023 Renovations
Renovations to the decades-old building are guaranteed to enhance the Audubon Aquarium experience. The changes include a new 2,500-square-foot lobby enclosed with a bird-safe, glass curtain wall. The former IMAX Theater has been transformed into the Audubon Insectarium. Separate entrances to the Aquarium and the Insectarium are located on the second floor.
What to expect during your visit
Guests can experience special animal encounters with penguins and a 60-foot-long, hands-on touch pool with sharks and stingrays, daily animal presentations, and the highly anticipated behind-the-scenes access to the Aquarium’s largest exhibit, the 450,000-gallon Gulf of Mexico exhibit.
In the Amazon gallery, visitors can walk among lush greenery and 60 free-flying colorful birds representing 15 different species before venturing into the Amazon Encounter. Here, visitors will find even more animal species, including an armadillo, tortoise, several kinds of birds, and coming soon, the newest member of the Audubon Aquarium family, a Linnaeus’ two-toed sloth.
