Contemporary Arts Center
Description
In the fall of 1976, a group of visual artists joined forces to create Contemporary Art Center New Orleans (CAC) to bridge the gap between the visual arts and the performing arts. Today, the CAC is one of the strongest and most financially viable art organizations in the South and promotes and supports artists through first-class shows, performances and public exhibits.
The CAC has been the foundation for some of the most memorable art shows, while also developing foundations to support artists and other art missions, including SweetArts Katrina, a fund to help artists affected by Katrina. The CAC's Education Department is noteworthy for connecting public and private schoolchildren, adults, and individuals with special needs with artists, actors, and dancers for various arts-related outreach programs.
Visual Arts
The visual arts department produces ongoing thematic shows and exhibits that the CAC not only sponsors, but also provides additional educational workshops and behind-the-scenes passes for those interested in the performing arts. While the space and the shows are dedicated to many art forms and all media, the CAC is primarily known for works by contemporary artists. Each show is accompanied by workshops and educational opportunities for viewers to learn about the art.
Recent shows include Electro-Sonic Painting (which allows the audience the chance to make electro-sonic art) and the nationally acclaimed, live stage sitcom series "Driven."
Performing Arts
By allowing performers, dancers, and actors unequaled access to stages and performance arenas, the CAC provides one of the most comprehensive support programs for the performing arts in the South. The CAC is also the largest non-university associated theatre operating in New Orleans. It is an excellent, affordable venue for catching local music, theatre, and dance performances. The Music of New Orleans concert series has gained national attention and is set for a cross-country tour after the run at the CAC.
The Facility
The building, donated during the art boom of the 1990s and the expansion of the Warehouse District, has an open floor plan and expansive windows, and natural light plays a huge role in how the CAC displays its work. Professional lighting has been installed and mobile walls relocate rooms as needed for exhibit changes. The staff prides itself on its art training and many of them are practicing artists. Classrooms line the rear and west side of the building for dance and performance classes.
