Louisiana's Civil War Museum at Confederate Memorial Hall
Description
Founded in 1891 by Confederate veterans of Louisiana as a repository of their memorabilia from the War Between The States, Louisiana's Civil War Museum at Confederate Memorial Hall is not only the oldest continually operating museum in the state, but represents the second largest collection of Confederate memorabilia in the United States. Veterans and their families have donated more than 90 percent of the artifacts in the museum, while 90 thousand war-related documents, housed on permanent loan at Tulane University, are available for research purposes.
Wonderfully preserved Confederate uniforms, original battle flags, rare Confederate guns, presentation swords. Southern artwork and more than 500 rare photographs are just some of the artifacts on display at Louisiana's Civil War Museum at Confederate Memorial Hall, which is also known for being the place where Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy, lay in state after he died in New Orleans.
Louisiana's Civil War Museum at Confederate Memorial Hall is located in New Orleans' Museum District, practically on top of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and very near the National World War II Museum, Contemporary Arts Center and Louisiana Children's Museum. Some of New Orleans' best known restaurants are also within walking distance, as are some of the city's best known attractions such as the French Quarter, the Louisiana Superdome, the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas and the Audubon Insectarium.
