Crescent City Cafe's "buy one-give one" makes brunch even more delicious
I've said it before, but it bears repeating: Brunch is most definitely my favorite meal of the entire week. The endless combinations of both sweet and savory breakfast foods ease my anxiety about making decisions, and the leisurely enjoyment of sitting on a patio with a mimosa while waiting for a table has become synonymous with a weekend morning. Nevermind the fact that it's completely acceptable to have dessert after breakfast. Gosh, can brunch get any better?
As a matter of fact, it can, thanks to Crescent City Cafe. This Saturday, the pop-up cafe, which serves breakfast to the homeless and low-income once a month, is hosting its first fundraiser: the One+One Brunch.
Crescent City Cafe is a complete labor love, run solely through volunteer efforts. Young adult volunteers perform the duties of cooks, hosts and waitstaff, and they always refer to the homeless who are dining with them as "guests."
"We aim to serve the homeless with dignity and love," said Georgia McBride, a volunteer who has been with the Cafe since it opened in February, 2009. "We are not your average soup kitchen."
The cafe is also funded solely through donations. St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian donates money every month, and Rayne Methodist donates their space. They also received a small grant, and, most excitingly, nailed down their first real sponsor, Brown's Dairy.
After all of the volunteers' hard work, this will be their first ever fundraiser, and it's a deal anyone can handle. If you buy one $10 ticket for a delicious brunch this Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m., the Crescent City Cafe will be able to serve one brunch to someone in need over the next few months. As their website says, "It's simple math, and the sum is delicious."
The food sounds pretty delicious, as well. Shrimp and grits, breakfast tacos, Emeril's Sizzlin' Breakfast Casserole (with sausage, egg, cheese and rosemary), breakfast potatoes, coffee, orange juice... you know, the works. It's probably way better than anything you'd cook at home, right?
"We just want you to come, enjoy breakfast, and know that it's going to a good cause," McBride said.
The first-ever One+One Brunch will take place this Saturday, May 15 at Rayne Memorial United Methodist Church (3900 St. Charles Avenue) from 9 to 11 a.m. Tickets are $10, and each table seats eight guests, so bring friends along. You can order tickets in advance here.
