Dismiss the numbers: Healthier Saints can win Super Bowl
METAIRIE – First off, let’s dismiss this meaningless statistic that’s being thrown around: no team that has lost its last three regular-season games has gone on to the Super Bowl. This stat is being used to dismiss the Saints, losers of their last three regular-season games. First of all, most teams that lose their last three regular-season games don’t even make the playoffs.
What I’d like to know is, how many teams that lost their last three regular-season games also won their first 13 and therefore were still the top seed in their conference even after the losing streak? Ah, never mind.
The point is, much like the two-week buildup to the Super Bowl, this two-week build-up to the Saints’ divisional playoff game – it’s really three weeks if you start the clock when New Orleans wrapped up the No. 1 seed – provides way too much time for people to overanalyze and zero in on minutiae to the exclusion of the big picture.
Do you want to lose your last three games heading into the playoffs? No, that’s not the preference. But the big-picture question is: does the three-game losing streak mean the team has been figured out, does it mean the team “peaked too soon”, or neither.
In New Orleans’ case I think the answer is neither. First, dismiss the 23-10 “exhibition” loss to the Panthers on Sunday the way you should dismiss the fourth exhibition game for any team in any summer. It means nothing, nada, zip.
Second, if Garrett Hartley had made that 37-yard field goal at the end of the penultimate game against the Bucs, we’re not talking about a three-game losing streak. Sure, blowing a 17-0 lead to a two-win team was disturbing, and Hartley did miss, and the Saints did lose. But if changing one play could dramatically alter the perception, maybe the perception is skewed.
Three weeks ago, the Cowboys came into the Superdome and were clearly a better team than the Saints. Dallas was playing to save its season, desperate to erase the stigma of recent December failures, and it responded like a team that has established itself as a strong Super Bowl contender.
Still, New Orleans, despite being staggered by a 24-3 flurry, found itself down just 24-17 with the ball and ample time to score a tying touchdown and get into overtime. It didn’t, but that’s the most lopsided loss this team has in a game in which it utilized its MVP-worthy quarterback. This isn’t a 16-0 team, but it is a 13-3 team. I see no evidence that the Saints have been “exposed.”
Now for the peaking-too-soon possibility: We hear that the Saints will not have won a game in more than a month when they take the field for the divisional playoffs.
Sure, the Saints were playing at a higher level when they whipped New England on Nov. 30 than they have been since, and they haven’t won a game since beating Atlanta on Dec. 13.
They also have been playing without key injured players, and each one that didn’t go on injured reserve figures to be available when the Saints return to the field Jan. 16, though the loss of defensive end Charles Grant on Tuesday was a downer. Yeah, every team has injuries, but does every team get virtually everyone back in time for the playoffs?
Did New Orleans peak too soon or is it getting ready to peak when Jabari Greer, Tracy Porter, Randall Gay, Darren Sharper, Scott Shanle, Scott Fujita, Jonathan Vilma, Sedrick Ellis, Drew Brees, Lance Moore, Jeremy Shockey, and Pierre Thomas – all of whom sat out at least one of the last 11 games – all play in the same game for the first time since October 18?“I think when we play in the playoffs it’s going to be the same guys we started week one with and dominated with,” guard Carl Nicks said, “so I think that’s what we’re going to do.”
We’ll see, but the point is you can’t zero in on how the short-handed team played for three weeks and dismiss how the healthy one played for eight or 10 or 13, not when the healthy one is the team that’s going to line up against the Packers, Cardinals, or Eagles.
One more thing about the big picture. For all those saying Sean Payton should have played Brees and other key players against the Panthers to try and “build momentum”, how much “momentum” do you think Bill Belichick built by losing Wes Welker?
And speaking of momentum, have much of it did Arizona have last season when it lost four of its last six games with an average margin of defeat of more than 24 points? Answer: enough to go to the Super Bowl.
Here’s the bottom line: The Saints have put themselves in a position where they need to win two games in the Superdome to get to the Super Bowl. Brees has rightly pointed out that this opportunity guarantees them nothing, but nonetheless it’s the easiest route to the Super Bowl that a team can have.
This team knows that ultimately it will be judged by how it performs in the post-season, and if it fails to take advantage of this opportunity, its season will have been a failure.
That’s because New Orleans will be fresher than its opponent on Jan. 16, it will be the healthiest it has been in three months, and it might be the healthiest team in the playoffs.
Yeah, the Saints have a three-game losing streak. They also have everything going for them – a bye, homefield advantage throughout, and key players getting healthy at the optimum time.
Looking at the big picture, there’s no excuse for this team on a three-game losing streak not to make it to the Super Bowl.

OK.. I am a Saints fan since the mid 1970' and am now living Los Angeles. I will be heading in for the playoff game this weekend. I agree with this article. The interesting thing is that many sports analysts are not that much smarter than most of us. They don't watch the games!!! They rarely mention that the Saints sat all of their important key players last Sunday and 2nd and 3rd string in the 2nd half. So that one does not count at all!! We alll know that without Brees we are a 7-9 team. Ok then you have bad second half against Tampa which if you break it down means a really bad last 2 minutes and even with that a chance for final redemption with a fairly easy 36 yd kick that was shanked. The game against Dallas was tough. We were out played and beaten. The Cowboys played welland deserved to win, but we still had a chance at the end even after a poor performance. So basically there are 2 games that we did not play particularly well. After growing up a Saints fan and hoping to just be competitive (5-11 and 6-10 were considered good seasons) I think that 13-3 with a bye and Homefield throughout is more than anyone could ask for going into 2009!! Let's take it one game at a time and hopefully they will bring back a SB Trophy from Miami!! Go Saints!!

If your "worried" about the Saints in the playoffs then pick another team and move their! We are one of the 2 most dominate teams in the playoffs (other being Indy) look out here we come Mr Manning ! We are the only team that can beat us cowgirls didn't beat us our uncharateristic mistakes did, bucs didn't beat us hartley did and we didn't play the kitties our trainers did. In closing Geaux Saints and screw the haters!!!

I think you are little over optimistic here, but I pray to God you are RIGHT.

I don't understand this whole "momentum" thing. If winning gives you momentum, then how could the Saints have ever lost to the Cowboys? Hadn't the Saints won thirteen games in a row? How much more momentum can you get?

Been a Saints fan for 35 Years. This is the year and for this team and people of New Orleans fittingly so. Both deserve it. I live in northern Ontario, Canada and you have a large community far from you cheering you to Super Bowl success as much as you people want it. Go Saints.

I'll give everyone more meaningless statistics.
The oddsmakers will have the Saints favored to beat any first round opponent. Doesn't matter if it's the Eagles, Packers, or Cardinals. The Saints will be favored.
If they do win that first game as oddsmakers expect, they'll also be favored against any opponent in the championship game. Doesn't matter if it's the Packers, Cardinals, Cowboys, or Vikings. The Saints will be favored.
Crank this mother up.

I think that the Saints don't need all of the media saying how great they are. That just made everyone play that much harder to beat us. Now, whoever we play in the playoffs will come in like the Pats did and get blown away. Also, please get rid of those black pants and go back to the gold ones, or at least the black with gold. The all black looks horrible. Jim Henderson said it makes the players look small and less intimidating and I agree. I think they are just plain bad luck. Saints put on the Black & Gold again and I believe they will play great & win from here on out. GO SAINTS!!!!!!

despite what all the naysayers print, i was very encouraged by the performance of the defense against carolina. they had been destroying their most recent opponents and we did well with most of our starters sitting. When i saw jabari greer attacking that sweep and when i saw him making tackles on receivers before they got the first down i saw the defense that helped get us to the number one seed.
forget all the hype if the d comes back healthy and the o continues on the same path the saints should make it to the super bowl no matter what teams come through here to play, dallas included.

Tremendous article....I too am tired of the meaningless statistics and so much hoopla given to other teams. Drew Brees and the entire saints team have worked very hard to get where they are and deservedly so. If they believe.....then I believe. Saints nation, let's not only support our team, but let's also believe in their capabilities. That's how they as a team have gotten so far...they support and believe in each other. So now it's time that we do our part for our saints....even if we're not able to be there on Jan. 16(victory), the game that follows (victory), or the super bowl (VICTORY) we gotta believe....we gotta believe...we gotta believe! WHO DAT SAY THEY GONE BEAT THEM SAINTS! WHO DAT! WHO DAT!

The question is, will these players be 100%, or are they back but not playing their best? It's clear that Shockey made a difference in the efficiency of the offense this year compared to last year when he played gimpy, he needs to be healthy. Pierre needs to be healthy bc he is clearly a better option than Bush, who I'm still not sure exactly what he's done this season to deserve to be rested against the Panthers. A healthy Greer is needed, a well above average CB when at his best.
If these guys are all healthy, the Saints can regain their mojo and get through a very tough NFC. If they're not, there are other teams in the NFC with better rosters than the Saints.

Nicely played. Concise and to the point.
Every season has its little arcs and dips. The Saints didn't look like world-beaters any number of times in the first 13 games this season, like when they led Buffalo 10-7 in the fourth quarter, or trailed Miami by 21 right before the half.
Why aren't people piling on the Vikings, who were tanking like the Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor for the last four weeks? Because their coach put the starters in to run up the score against a Giants team that was running for the bus at the opening kickoff?
Or the Eagles, who ran off six wins against a bunch of tomato cans and got pounded far worse than the Saints in a game where the stakes were equal?
This team has a better chance of representing the NFC in Miami than any other. Period.
