Couple on Hand to Flip the Switch at Official Lighting Ceremony of Annual Attraction
NEW ORLEANS – Nov. 25, 2009 – Harrah’s New Orleans “Miracle on Fulton Street” got off to a winning start at the Nov. 24 lighting ceremony. Quarterback of the undefeated New Orleans Saints, Drew Brees along with wife Brittany and son Baylen, flipped the switch to mark the official opening of the holiday attraction, located in the heart of downtown New Orleans.
This year, the bigger, brighter and better “Miracle on Fulton Street” will bring the magic and spirit of the holiday season alive for locals and visitors of all ages beginning Nov. 27 – Jan. 3. This free and open to the public event opens daily at 12 p.m.
Miracle on Fulton Street is sure to enchant guests with a dazzling holiday boardwalk and new features including Macy’s Tremendous Tree, which towers 30-feet in the sky, and a giant gingerbread streetcar covered in snow, reminiscent of the atypical snowfall New Orleans experienced last year. Harrah’s Hotel will also shine bright with red and green lights.
“We are excited to make Miracle on Fulton Street bigger, better and brighter for the public this year,” said Jim Hoskins, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Harrah’s New Orleans. “It is sure to add holiday cheer to all who come to enjoy this great New Orleans tradition, which this year features the Macy’s Tremendous Tree and New Orleans twist on a gingerbread house.”
The entrance to the attraction, located at Fulton and Poydras Streets, will be defined by a series of custom-built, faux wrought iron arches, accentuated by 12-foot Christmas trees and 3-foot fleur de lis ornaments. The arches will create a dramatic canopy illuminated by thousands of LED lights. A computerized system will enable lighting technicians to create varied color themes against the backdrop of arches, ornaments and trees.
‘Faux snow’ will be another highlight of the attraction. Periodic snowfalls, while extremely rare in New Orleans, are nonetheless ‘forecast’ for Fulton Street this holiday season every hour on the hour beginning at 12 p.m. daily.
Whether naughty or nice, all are welcome to enjoy the beautiful decorations and festivities. New this year will be Harrah’s “Let it Show” movie nights. Holiday movies will be shown every Friday and Saturday from 6 – 8 p.m. on Harrah’s Fulton Square. Movies include Elf, The Grinch, The Polar Express and A Christmas Story. Guests can also play their favorite holiday song on Harrah’s “Play Me, I’m Free” piano on Fulton Street.
Live entertainment will take place on Fulton Square on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 – 10 p.m. and on Sundays from 2 – 5 p.m. Performers will include New Orleans favorites Trombone Shorty, Gina Brown, Benny Grunch & the Bunch, Topcats, Wiseguys, Rockin Dopsie, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Bucktown Allstars and others. Chorus groups are scheduled to perform every Sunday.
Santa’s Shop will sell official “Miracle on Fulton Street” merchandise, including a commemorative streetcar ornament, disposable cameras, coffee mugs, insulated travel mugs and much more. Beginning Nov. 27, commemorative photos with Santa will be available in front of Macy’s Tremendous Tree Fridays and Saturdays from 6 – 10 p.m. and Sundays from 3 – 7 p.m.
Miracle on Fulton Street sponsors include: Absolut, Aidan Gill, Coors Light, Entercom New Orleans, Ernst Café, Gordon Biersch, Grand Isle, Kahlua, Macy's, Pepsi, Rouses Supermarket, Ruth's Chris and WDSU-TV.
