Friday's workouts are the last before Saturday afternoon's Black and Gold scrimmage, which is also closed to the public.
"We've been practicing pretty hard," said Saints running back Reggie Bush. "(The scrimmage) will be a good chance to see where we're at and to gauge ourselves."
During team drills, the Saints worked on last-second situations, which included quarterbacks throwing mostly slant routes to receivers, who then declared themselves down to allow for a time out to be called.
At one point during team activity, the Saints showed off their version of a "Wildcat" formation, with quarterback Drew Brees lined up at wide receiver and running back Pierre Thomas taking the direct snap.
The defensive highlight of the session was an interception by linebacker Scott Shanle of a Brees pass that was tipped at the line of scrimmage.
Safety Darren Sharper left the morning drill about halfway through the workout and never returned. Tight end Dan Campbell and cornerback Randall Gay rode stationary bikes during team stretching and did not participate in drills.
"They're pushing us," said one of the team's new offseason additions, cornerback Jabari Greer. "It's very intense. It's a challenge, especially with the heat."
The fans' next opportunity to watch the team practice will come on Monday. After Saturday's scrimmage, the team will take Sunday off.
The preseason opener is a week from today in the Superdome against the Cincinnati Bengals.
