The Saints worked for over two hours in Jackson, Mississippi this morning as training camp 2008 entered week #2. Following practice, Head Coach Sean Payton confirmed what Neworleans.com Sports and Ed Daniels reported over the weekend--that starting corner Mike McKenzie is ahead of schedule in his recovery from knee surgery and is likely to be taken on the PUP (physically unable to practice) list and practice this afternoon (Monday, July 28).
Deuce McAllister worked this morning as he continues to rebound from swelling and having his left knee drained this past weekend. Jeremy Shockey also worked in many of the morning drills and continues to show well. Devery Henderson and Tracy Porter remain out with hamstring pulls suffered this past weekend. Rookie wide receiver Todd Blythe remains out of action after having his bell rung Sunday afternoon.
Also returning to the practice field was defensive tackle Brian Young, who had missed the Saturday and Sunday workouts. The eight-year veteran worked with the first-team.
The Saints spent an extensive amount of time (nearly 45 minutes) working on red zone drills and the defense was dominant. Defensive back Usama Young was the star of the morning workouts, intercepting three passes, including two in the red zone and one in the regular pass drill. Jason Craft had a pick as well while LSU's Randall Gay had a terrific interception, undercutting a Marques Colston route, tipping the ball into the air, and coming down with it.
The team returns for their second workout of the day at 4:20 this afternoon.
