METAIRIE - By all accounts, Grace King is an experienced team with 15
starters returning from 2008. Of course, the Fighting Irish were 0-9 a
year ago but figure to grow and post some victories in 2009. Thursday
night was not the night for number one.
Jesuit took advantage of four Grace King turnovers, scoring early and often en route to an easy 42-0 victory over King in the second game of the Kiwanis Club Jamboree at Joe Yenni Stadium in Metairie. Bonnabel won the opening game 21-6 over Riverdale.
After King made a first down by penalty on the game's first possession, they were forced to punt. Dylan Richard mishandled the punt, recovered the muff, and promptly returned it 50 yards for a score. With the extra point, Jesuit led 7-0 with 11:19 to play in the first quarter.
On King's next possession, Andrew Rosiere fumbled with Jesuit's Warren Bondi recovering at the King 17-yard line. It took the Blue Jays four plays to add to their lead, scoring on a 1-yard plunge by Gary Langlois. Ralph Freibert's extra point was good again and it was 14-0 Jesuit with 7:32 to play in the first quarter.
Two possessions later, a bad shotgun snap by King was recovered by Jesuit's Andrew DeGenova at the Irish eight-yard line of King. Jesuit quarterback then connected with Brycen Koch on a nine-yard touchdown pass. With Freibert's extra point, the Blue Jays took a 21-0 lead with 4:45 to play in the first half.
In the second half, Jesuit took the opening kickoff. After a short squib kick, the Blue Jays drove 52 yards in 7 plays, scoring on a one-yard run by Blaine Perkins. Jonathan Poole's extra point was good and Jesuit led 28-0 with 12:06 to play in the game.
After a 20-yard punt return by Richard, Jesuit drove 42 yards in three plays, scoring on a six-yard run by Blaine Perkins. Friebert's extra point made it 35-0 Jesuit with 8:22 to play in the game. Reserve quarterback Connor McMahon engineered the final scoring drive for the Blue Jays, scoring himself on a 13-yard run with 1:02 to play to produce the final score of 42-0 Jesuit.
For Jesuit, Andrew DeGenova had a fumble recovery, a sack and a tackle-for-loss. Lance Baker had a sack for the Fighting Irish.
Jesuit opens the regular season next Thursday night against Douglass live on WGSO, 990 AM/WGSO.com and at NewOrleans.Com/Sports while Grace King opens next Friday night at Central Lafourche.
