Russell Batiste, George Porter Jr, and Ivan Neville Maple Leaf Bar - Thursday, October 2nd
Funktastic is the only word that can be used to describe these three legendary musicians on stage together. With Ivan Neville pounding on his Hammond B3 organ while singing funk classics, backed up by one of the most talented bass players to walk this earth, George Porter, and the masterful sounds of Russell Batiste keeping the groove with the drums, this was one for the record books.
When you hear the last names Porter, Neville, or Batiste you think classic New Orleans Funk (Meters, Funky Meters, Dumstaphunk), and that is exactly what the audience got Thursday night. I was having nothing short of an excellent time, and just when I thought hardly anything could make this show any better, one of my favorite New Orleans musicians, drummer Stanton Moore of Galactic walked in the front door.
The crowd applauded him as he somehow brought a new level of funkiness to the Maple Leaf stage. These four musicians play regularly in the Big Easy, but not together. If by some miracle this quartet graces a stage in the city again soon, grab everyone you know and make it a night to remember.
