Charter Schools |
This section contains all of the public primary and secondary schools in the New Orleans area. These schools are funded through the state and federal government. Neighborhoods throughout the city are divided into districts, designating which school those children are supposed to attend.
|
Charter schools are defined as public schools operating independently of the local school board, often with a curricular and educational philosophy different from the other schools in the area. Since Hurricane Katrina, over half of all the schools that re-opened have done so as charter schools.

Private Secondary Schools |
Private schools, or independent schools, are schools not administered by local, state or national government; these schools retain the right to select their student body and are funded in whole or in part with students' tuition rather than state funds. The secondary level includes schools offering grades anywhere from 7th through 12th. This category also includes prep schools, boarding schools and day schools.

Private Elementary Schools |
The Recovery School District’s over-riding objective is to make the most of New Orleans' current, once-in-a-lifetime chance to reinvent public education in New Orleans. By creating a world-class school system, our public schools will attract students, families and businesses back to New Orleans; rekindle our neighborhoods and renew our culture. Be a part of the rebuilding!

Private elementary schools are very popular choices in New Orleans, and they are often religiously-affiliated. Like private high schools, they retain the right to select their students and charge tuition. Uniforms, often plaid, are also usually a part of a private school education. This list includes those schools which teach grades from pre-kindergarten to eighth.
