2008-2009 New Orleans Opera Association Fact Sheet
The city of New Orleans is America's First City of Opera. The first documented production on the North American continent is André Ernest Grétry’s Sylvain which was performed on May 22, 1796. The “modern” New Orleans Opera Association (NOOA) was founded in 1943 and is the only fully professional producer and presenter of opera in the city.
The 2008 Fall performances are scheduled to be produced in historic McAlister Auditorium on Tulane University’s uptown campus. The return home to the Mahalia Jackson Theatre of the Performing Arts, located in Armstrong Park adjacent to the French Quarter in New Orleans is scheduled for January 2009. All operas feature projected English supertitles at every performance. The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra is the official orchestra of the New Orleans Opera.
NOOA is encouraging more regional participation this season by offering, a Sunday Matinee Subscription Series at a discounted rate. Performances begin at 8:00 p.m. on Fridays and at 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. Ticket holders are encouraged to attend ‘Nuts and Bolts’ lectures, a special, free audience orientation scheduled one hour prior to each performance in a venue next door to the theater.

Principal artists are selected in annual New York auditions by Artistic Director and Conductor Robert Lyall and not a single season of the New Orleans Opera takes place without the involvement of Louisiana artists. The company frequently features principal cast members who hail from Louisiana and are nationally and internationally acclaimed: Paul Groves; Elizabeth Futral; Greer Grimsley; Sarah Jane McMahon; Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet; Anthony Laciura and Alfred Walker III, to name just a few.
The New Orleans Opera Association’s H. Lloyd Hawkins Scenic Studio continues to service opera companies throughout the U.S. and Canada by building and renting sets. This ‘”in-house” studio is nationally recognized for its designs, and assures the New Orleans Opera the finest scenery and props available. All of the scenic artists who build and paint the sets, sew the costumes, and assemble the props are locally based.
MetroPelican Opera, the education/outreach “wing” of the New Orleans Opera Association, was founded in 1988 by Arthur Cosenza. He chose “metro” to represent the 7-parish population base of New Orleans, and “pelican” for the state bird. MetroPelican has subsequently toured throughout Louisiana, as well as crossing state borders into Mississippi and Texas. Student Groups are invited to attend our "Preview Performances" - the final dress rehearsal of each opera - FREE OF CHARGE!
