United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., celebrated the commissioning of the USS New York that took place today in New York City. The ship was built at Avondale Shipyard, near New Orleans, and includes 7.5 tons of World Trade Center steel in her bow.
"The skilled workers at Avondale Shipyard have taken the remnants of the greatest tragedy in our nation's history and transformed them into a symbol of our enduring resilience," said Sen. Landrieu. "In Louisiana, we have had a long history of dedicating ourselves to rebuilding from the ruins of disaster. I could not be more proud of the hard work and brilliant craftsmanship of my fellow Louisianians, who rolled up their sleeves and turned steel from the World Trade Center into the USS New York. In doing so, they have constructed a ship that will not only serve as a lasting memorial to those who lost their lives on 9/11, but also as an integral part of our nation's defense for many years to come."
The USS New York will remain in New York through Veterans Day, Nov. 11, and then head to Norfolk, Va., for about a year of crew training and exercises.
