Krewe of Rex
Rex is the King of Mardi Gras, and one of the oldest and most famous parades since the krewe formed in 1872.
Read MoreDescription
The King of Carnival, the ruler of Fat Tuesday, Rex has been the global symbol of New Orleans' most famous holiday since his first appearance in 1872. The all-male krewe is responsible for the concept of day parades, for the official Mardi Gras flag and colors — green for faith, gold for power, purple for justice — and for the anthem of Carnival, "If Ever I Cease to Love." Rex is also the krewe that initiated one of the most popular throws, the doubloon. Approximately 600 riders toss collectible throws, including the krewe's traditional gold doubloons, krewe-emblemed cups and stuffed "bouef gras" – the fatted ox that is the symbol of the great feast held the day before Lent begins. Sponsored by an organization called the School of Design, the 600 men of Rex operate Pro Bono Publico — For The Public Good. Rex selects an outstanding civic leader to reign over Mardi Gras as king, and his queen is always a debutante.
