The 900 beauties who ride in the Krewe of Iris, New Orleans' oldest and one of the largest parading Carnival organizations for women, stick to the strict Carnival tradition of wearing full-length masks and white gloves. And you won't see these lovely ladies nipping sips from flasks or plastic cups: alcohol is strictly forbidden. The parade features equestrian units and 32 floats. The club traces its roots to 1917. Ten years before its inaugural street parade in 1959, the Iris tableau ball became the first such event ever to be televised. The krewes throws include ceramic beads, doubloons, plastic cups and medallion beads. The most coveted throw comes from the Captain of the krewe, who tosses a unique, collectible doubloon every year.
