Krewe of Bacchus
Bacchus is one of three Mardi Gras “super krewes” known for its massive display of parade floats and celebrity royalty.
Read MoreDescription
Bacchus, the most innovative and imitated krewe founded in the 20th Century, resulted from a meeting of 12 businessmen who gathered in 1968 to explore new directions for Carnival clubs in New Orleans. The largest floats ever assembled, the transformation of the tableau ball into a massive supper dance with Las Vegas-style entertainment, and selecting a national celebrity as its monarch are a few of the tradition-breaking moves made by the Bacchus organization. Stars who have had the honor of representing the Roman god of wine include Andy Garcia, Val Kilmer, Hulk Hogan, Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason, and Charlton Heston.
Bacchus features more than 1,200 riders and 31 floats, including signature floats like Bacchasurus (a giant "gentle" dinosaur), Bacchagator, Bacchawhoppa (an 85-foot whale that holds more than 60 krewe members), King-, Queen- and Baby Kong, and the three-section, mega Bacchatality float carrying members from New Orleans hospitality industry.
