Prepare to laugh and party with one of Mardi Gras' most rascal-y night parading krewes! True to its clever name (a play on coup d'etat), Le Krewe D'Etat formed in 1996 with a single mission: to shake up the Mardi Gras krewe ranks and resurrect the traditional satirical style of Mardi Gras parades. The krewe first rolled in 1998 and the Le Krewe D'etat's parade has been a Carnival favorite ever since. The annual theme for the parade is a well-kept secret, and in keeping with the krewe's irreverent take on esteemed Mardi Gras royalty and traditions, a "Dictator" reigns over the krewe in place of a traditional king or queen. The identity of the ruler is never made public. The krewe is known for tossing some of the most innovative, fun items, including throws with battery-powered blinking lights. D'Etat's Latin motto, "Vivite ut vehatis. Vehite ut vivatis," translates, "Live to Ride, Ride to Live."
