Local Tips

  • Tip #1: Get a front row seat to Carnival: book a hotel on a Mardi Gras parade route.
  • Tip #2: Most hotels require a 2 or 3-day minimum stay during Mardi Gras. Expand your hotel search to include more days. Even if you ditch a day of the reservation, you’ll get a better selection of hotels and rates.
  • Tip #3: Your car? Leave it at the hotel or in a parking lot or garage. Walking a parade route is the best way to experience Mardi Gras.
  • Tip #4: Pay for a potty. Public bathrooms are virtually non-existent. Bars and hotels charge $5 and up for all-day access to facilities, and it is worth every penny.
  • Tip #5: DO NOT pee in public! N.O.P.D. may turn a blind eye to minor public intoxication, but there's zero tolerance for whizzing in public (yes, behind a dumpster is still public). You will get a ticket, or locked up for the night.
  • Tip #6: Reserve a Mardi Gras Grand Stand and see everything from bleacher seating.
