Less than a mile from the French Quarter and the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, and a few blocks from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, the newly renovated and renamed Hotel Modern (formerly Hotel Le Cirque) caters to a variety of guests. But its location on the streetcar line at Lee Circle gives those who want to venture into the Garden District and Uptown neighborhoods one of the most convenient starting points in downtown New Orleans.
The Hotel Modern represents another contemporary element in the neighborhood milieu. The 10-story hotel showcases a sleek interior design and a modern building facade that has been illuminated nightly since 2006. Recently remodeled under new owner Klaus Ortlieb, the hotel has 135 custom-furnished rooms distinct from one another in size, shape and decor. Each room includes some home-away-from-home touches: a small selection of curated books that can be purchased by guests, with proceeds donated to a charity; vintage guitars to bring out the musician in us all; “intimacy kits” with gourmet treats and dark chocolate bars; and iPod docking stations.
The hotel itself offers distinct entertainment and dining options. The cocktail lounge Bellocq features burlesque shows and custom concoctions from the founders of the Uptown cocktail bar Cure. And Tamarind, chef Dominique Macquet’s new restaurant offers Vietnamese-French cuisine inspired by Vietnam’s colonial period; Macquet’s chef de cuisine, Quan Tran, spent several months in his native country perfecting the menu.
Guests enjoy free, in-room wireless internet and complimentary access to the St. Charles Avenue Athletic Club a few blocks away. The multi-lingual staff help international guests feel welcome.
The Warehouse Arts District has in recent years become one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods.
