On the eastern edge of the French Quarter, the newly-renovated Melrose Mansion recalls what it might have been like to live in grand antebellum fashion in this historic Creole neighborhood along Esplanade Avenue.
Restored to reflect the original family home built in 1884 and designed by noted architect James Freret, the Victorian Gothic mansion features a courtyard with a large pool, private or shared balconies with finger-lace ironwork, and pillared verandas.
The Melrose offers nine suites in the mansion itself, and five more in the Napoleon House located behind the mansion. Each suite showcases antique furnishings, ebony-stained hardwood floors, and cathedral ceilings with large chandeliers. Each has a king-sized bed and an array of modern luxuries: 350-thread count linens; a mini-fridge; a large flat-screen television; and an iPod docking station.
True to its origins as a private residence, the entire mansion can be reserved by wedding parties and other groups.
From the Melrose Mansion’s convenient location at the corner of Esplanade Avenue and Burgundy Street, you’re mere steps to the French Quarter. By day, stroll a few blocks down the avenue in the direction of the Mississippi River to check out the French Market, home of Café du Monde, and Jackson Square. The Melrose Mansion is also within walking distance to the starting points for several French Quarter Tours. And, if you’re coming to experience some of the best in New Orleans nightlife and music, you’re two blocks away from the always-lively strip of restaurants and jazz and live music clubs on Frenchmen Street.
For those long nights that you don’t want to end, drop in at Buffa’s located just across the street from the mansion; the neighborhood bar is open 24/7.
A light continental breakfast is served Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The small on-site gym is well-equipped with free weights and cardiovascular and strength machines. And an on-site hair salon is a nice addition to the neighborhood.
