New Orleans' own Louis Armstrong is celebrated every August during the Satchmo Summerfest. This year marks the 110th birthday of one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, Satchmo himself. The nickname "Satchmo" is short for "Satchelmouth" which was given to Armstrong because he would often put coins in his mouth, instead of in a satchel.
The festival, which is free to the public like the other French Quarter Festivals, celebrated its 10th anniversary last year. Musical performances, food, dance lessons and seminars are the many attractions of the festival. Music fans from all over the country flock to New Orleans in early August to celebrate the life of our hometown hero, Louis Armstrong.
Satchmo Summerfest will take place in the French Quarter near the Old U.S. Mint between Barracks Street and Esplanade Avenue. Abita and Captain Morgan are the official alcohol sponsors of Satchmo Summerfest.
