Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo rose like a phoenix from the ashes of Hurricane Katrina – a free New Orleans festival for locals designed to celebrate the arts, culture and recreational features that make New Orleans an amazing city to live in. If you want to experience a truly local festival in New Orleans, Bayou Boogaloo is one of the best, offering all of the food, music and festivities of a large festival (minus the crowds and admission price).

One of the great features of Bayou Boogaloo is its location along the banks of scenic, historic Bayou St. John. Three stages are set up along the bayou in Mid-City, and you can kick your shoes off and dance to New Orleans’ best brass bands, Cajun, Zydeco, jazz, and blues music while enjoying a cold beer, or take a break and sample great local cuisine from some of New Orleans’ top restaurants. Artists from the region sell unique pieces with New Orleans flair, and community-based groups set up shop to answer any questions about sustainability, environmental issues, and neighborhood concerns.

Don’t miss the annual Rubber Duck Derby hosted by the Second Harvest Food Bank. More than 10,000 numbered rubber ducks are poured into the bayou for a firehose race to the finish line. Proceeds from the race benefit Second Harvest. More events at Bayou Boogaloo: the annual Zulu Anniversary Run to Ride 5K, Bayou Boogaloo Bicycle Pub Crawl, and the Bicycle Second Line.

The easiest way to keep up with all the events happening in the Big Easy is to regularly check the NewOrleans.com calendar
